Getting back to a Damn Pencil

It has really been a long time since I have just sketched with a pencil (using a Wacom tablet almost exclusively at work).  I have found that I am a bit rusty and that I really miss the variety of feel and moment so easily generated.  So tired of the computers rendition of a line, and then tired of fixing a simple line electronically impaired.  Hopefully the momentum with continue and the rust will fall.

Sketches from San Diego

Went to visit my son Alex in San Diego and while the family played "beached" whale on the Del Mar beach I sketched as usual. Some people, some cartoons, and one woman who I had to draw from memory, a 75 (at least) year old woman with perfect breasts (artificial of course) People are sometimes weirder than cartoons.

Sketchbook love

I open each day just sketching the first thing that comes out of the page. This was my warm-up to animating the Dashboard Hula yesterday. Today's warm-up is in recycling.

A couple of "Toughs"

Love drawing tough guys for some odd reason, makes me feel more like a "man", I guess.

Just a sketch

One of the many sketches I did while in Boston. The sea captain on the right was inspired by a gravestone in a small church cemetery. I couldn't read the name on the grave marker due to the erosion of the stone. I could make out that the unfortunate soul was a Capt. Lower on the stone you could read the length of his life, 52 years (no dates) and the simple phrase, "Peg of Leg." That just cracked me up. Made me think of my own epitaph. "Dumb of Head". The other character is just another "tough".

More Recent Sketches

I am making a real habit out of this. When you have been an artist as long as I have, it is easy to get complacent. I am trying my damnedest to rediscover new techniques and styles. It is not easy to redefine or refocus your art. I have been a chameleon most of my artistic life, able to copy many different styles. Some of that was out of necessity. Now I am trying to find one that I can call my own. HA!

Brush Pen

Here are some posts from a recent sketchbook. Just playing around with a new brush pen from Prismacolor. They have a nice solid tip, smooth action, and feel. Faber Castell also makes a decent brush pen and offers several sets in color.
